From campus to commercialization: Ontario universities earn global recognition for entrepreneurship
Ontario's innovation ecosystem has reached a historic milestone.
PitchBook's 2026 University Rankings have recognized five IPON-supported postsecondary institutions among the world's top universities for producing venture-backed founders. The annual rankings evaluate universities based on the number of alumni entrepreneurs whose companies have secured venture capital funding, drawing from an analysis of more than 222,000 founders worldwide.
Most notably, the University of Waterloo ranked #7 globally, becoming the first non-U.S. university ever to break into PitchBook's global top 10 for entrepreneurship. PitchBook highlighted Waterloo's achievement as a significant moment for Canadian entrepreneurship and the growing global influence of Canada's innovation ecosystem.
Ontario universities recognized among the world's best
Five Ontario institutions supported through IPON's Innovation Fellowship Program earned a place in PitchBook's prestigious global rankings:
University of Waterloo: #7 globally
University of Toronto: #17 globally
Western University: #36 globally
Queen's University: #78 globally
York University: #98 globally
Leading the way, the University of Waterloo's ranking positions it as Canada's top university for entrepreneurship, the highest-ranked non-U.S. institution globally and the second-highest-ranked public university in the world. Waterloo's strength extends beyond its overall ranking. The university also placed #11 globally for female entrepreneurship, making it the highest-ranked Canadian institution in that category.

PitchBook's rankings focus on real-world entrepreneurial outcomes by measuring the number of alumni founders who have gone on to build venture-backed companies. The 2026 rankings are based on founders whose companies received venture funding between January 1, 2015 and August 1, 2026.
